Prosperous In The Great Depression
 
 Hi everyone, I wrote this letter over the holidays and some may have not gotten the chance to read it.  For those who did read it said it helped them greatly so I thought I should get it out there again so maybe it can help another owner. I did some research to find out who was successful during the Great Depression and what did they do to survive? If those who made it during the worst economic time in our history and then flourished they had to have done something right. I found some food companies that flourished during the Great Depression  and they were Tyson, Proctor and Gamble, Birds Eye and Howard Johnson The first is that they all advertised big time! While others cut back on advertising they got very aggressive and were able to even take their weaker competitors customer base. They put more into advertising then they ever had before. Procter and Gamble even started doing creative advertising on the radio that helped shape radio as we know it today.
 
The second is they all got very creative. John Tyson realized he had a truck that was not being used for five months out of the year so he started hauling chickens and now Tyson  is a $24 billion dollars business. Birds Eye created their firstfrozen food and Howard Johnson, the ice cream maker, created his beautiful roadside restaurants and then expanded them into restaurant/motels.
 
During the great depression many foods were also created that are popular today that came from those difficult times such as, pigs in a blanket, spam, Kraft macaroni and cheese,Toll House chocolate chip cookies, Bisquick, Ritz Crackers,Krispy Kreme dounhnuts, Nestle's chocolate cookies and even the Colonel Harland Sanders created his secret recipefor which we now know as Kentucky Fried Chicken.
