As always I try and remind people what industry we are in because sometimes a restaurant owner can lose focus on what makes their restaurant different then others and when that happens owners can start to the lose revenue very quickly.

Whether someone owns a full service restaurant, a quick service restaurant, a catering company, a deli etc... we are all in the Hospitality Industry. To achieve excellence in hospitality is not easy but it is the key that makes the difference of a successful restaurant to a failing restaurant.

Stop and really take a hard look at how hospitable your restaurant really is. Can you be doing better? Even if you are considered a "5 Star" restaurant you always striving for excellence so I know you will probably say "Yes I can do better." That is why a "5 Star" stands above the rest because hospitality and service is the main focus and is never jeopardized. If you begin to give better service you will find in no time that your business will start to grow and your bottom line will start to increase right before your eyes.

The Dog and Restaurant?

Normally you would not think that dogs have anything to do with a restaurant but in this case, a dog could be a CEO's best friend. Did you ever think that cute little thing looking up at you and wagging its tail had all your business answers and could help maximize your profits?

A large part of a restaurants bottom line profits is the reflection of how individuals perform in their job "descriptions." If an owner is "wearing too many hats" as some might say, or working too many of the jobs at their own company, then they will have a negative impact on the bottom line profits. If anyone is in a job description that is not suited for them then the company performs at a loss. If someone is taking on many jobs and is handling all of them it does not mean that all of the areas are being performed at their highest level, therefore the company again would be performing at a loss.

What is important for getting the highest return on performance is that someone performs their best at the task they are doing and that they are proud of their own accomplishments. Think of it this way....When we train a puppy we put them in a very small cage and it may seem inhuman but the dog will not poo in the cage where they have to sit, so they hold themselves until the owner takes them out for a walk. The puppy quickly learns what their boundaries are and then do very well in their new environment. If we let the puppy go anywhere they won't understand their boundaries. The owner won't be happy and neither will the puppy because the puppy won't know what is expected of them and knows they are not pleasing their owner. So think of it this way, when the employees do not understand what their job description is or if they are not suited for the position then it would be like having dog poo all over your restaurant, but instead it's all the money you lost.

A job description should be a written detailed outline of what the daily tasks are for a position and should always be re-evaluated. A job "description should not be confused with a job "responsibility" which I previously wrote about, "Why Some Managers Make Bank for Owners." Please read last article if you would like.

To properly fit someone into a position make sure they really enjoy what they do. Find out what they like to do best and find out what they least like to do and try not to give that job to them. I think every person offers something special and unique and there are some people who offer pure talent. Find out what it is and then maximize on it.

Hi Everyone, Not everyone wants to be Uno #1 or the Emperor of the Thrown who gets all the glitz and glamour and who is always in the spotlight. Some prefer to be second, to be someone's right hand man, to be the one who stands behind the thrown to support the Emperor but doesn't want all of the glitz and glamour of the spotlight, they would rather give that to someone else. Those are the people who make great managers and who help make great profitable companies.

Managers have a strong drive to be successful and they feel better about helping others when they are contributing to someones growth more then just the overseeing of the routine daily tasks. Companies do better when their managers have more "responsibility" and for business purposes we will call "responsibility" meeting a dollar amount in sales revenue. This is not about a job "description" I will talk about that in my next article The Dog Poo and The Restaurant you are not going to want miss that one. lol

First let your manager know you have a new responsibility for them. I bet you are going to make their day and put a smile on their face. Next tell them you need their help to boost up sales and get more people in the door with the economy.

Finally let them know the dollar amount you feel your business must do monthly and you will want to have a meeting with them once a week on every _______ , (sorry that one is up to you but you must stick with the meeting via phone or in person) to talk about how they are going to meet their new goal?

Hi everyone, I wrote this letter over the holidays and some may have not gotten the chance to read it. For those who did read it said it helped them greatly so I thought I should get it out there again so maybe it can help another owner. I did some research to find out who was successful during the Great Depression and what did they do to survive? If those who made it during the worst economic time in our history and then flourished they had to have done something right. So I did some research to find out what they did so I could pass it along to you the "Insight To A Prosperous Company."

I found some food companies that flourished during the Great Depression and they were Tyson, Proctor and Gamble, Birds Eye and Howard Johnson The first is that they all advertised big time! While others cut back on advertising they got very aggressive and were able to even take their weaker competitors customer base. They put more into advertising then they ever had before. Procter and Gamble even started doing creative advertising on the radio that helped shape radio as we know it today.

The second is they all got very creative. John Tyson realized he had a truck that was not being used for five months out of the year so he started hauling chickens and now Tyson is a $24 billion dollars business. Birds Eye created their firstfrozen food and Howard Johnson, the ice cream maker, created his beautiful roadside restaurants and then expanded them into restaurant/motels.

During the great depression many foods were also created that are popular today that came from those difficult times such as, pigs in a blanket, spam, Kraft macaroni and cheese,Toll House chocolate chip cookies, Bisquick, Ritz Crackers,Krispy Kreme dounhnuts, Nestle's chocolate cookies and even the Colonel Harland Sanders created his secret recipefor which we now know as Kentucky Fried Chicken.

It's just been a little over two months since I launched and already owners are shopping and reading my Newsletters in 16 different countries. I think that is just the coolest. Hi Everyone: With today's economy most restaurant owners are more then happy to listen to any new ideas that could help boost their restaurant sales and help better the economy for everyone. For those of you who have read my past newsletters you know that we have found that during the Great Depression the companies who advertised the most flourished during the worst economic times in our history. Knowing this I am going to stick with the leaders and help restaurant owners to also follow success and advertise more then ever before.
